From the New York Times bestselling author of Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, an …

Review of 'Piranesi' on 'Goodreads'

What a strange but delightful book. I was convinced I didn't like it at first, actually, but Piranesi the character--so spiritual, competent, and thoughtful--really drew me in.

Yoel Hoffmann: Japanese Death Poems (Paperback, 1998, Tuttle Publishing)

Review of 'Japanese Death Poems' on 'Goodreads'

I was expecting this to be a bit of a depressing read but it actually totally wasn't! I quite enjoyed the poems, many of which were focused on nature and transience. Reading details about the poet's lives was fun too. Yeah, I would definitely read this again.

Anne Rice: Interview With the Vampire (The Vampire Chronicles) (Paperback, 2004, Ballantine Books)

This is the story of Louis, as told in his own words, of his journey …

Review of 'Interview With the Vampire (The Vampire Chronicles)' on 'Goodreads'

Funnily enough, as a teen, I think I somehow skipped reading the very first novel in the Chronicles and just hopped around in the series. So it was cool to read the beginning. It was much darker than I expected, but I enjoyed the tension, romance, angst, and longing.
I was really rooting for Louis and Armand.

Virginia Woolf: Orlando (Penguin Modern Classics) (2000, Penguin Books Ltd)

In her most exuberant, most fanciful novel, Woolf has created a character liberated from the …

Review of 'Orlando (Penguin Modern Classics)' on 'Goodreads'

Weirdly, I thought this book would be gayer. It took a really really long time to get to the exciting part: the gender change. I'm trying to read all of Woolf's works, and I am glad I read this one. Still... I wasn't as impressed as I thought I would be.

Review of 'The Tea Dragon Tapestry' on 'Goodreads'

I am so sad the adventure is over. I loved the conclusion to this heart-warming series. It was so nice to see the characters grow and change over time, with and without their dragons. UGH WHY IS IT OVER

Review of 'Forest of Wool and Steel' on 'Goodreads'

I really enjoyed this. It was a thoughtful meditation on excellence and mastery in one's profession.

Abigail Friedman: The haiku apprentice (Paperback, 2008, Stone Bridge Press)

Abigail Friedman was an American diplomat in Tokyo, not a writer. A chance encounter leads …

Review of 'The haiku apprentice' on 'Goodreads'

I wasn't sold on the author's breezy, personal writing style at first but her journey really pulled me in! I've read this and her translation of Momoko Kuroda's work, and she's won me over.

Martin Shaw, Tony Hoagland: Cinderbiter (Paperback, 2020, Graywolf Press)

Review of 'Cinderbiter' on 'Goodreads'

I enjoyed being exposed to stories I didn't know. I found the language too lush and poetic at times, if that can be said of a poem! Still, I enjoyed the adventure.
